Cookie Notice

This notice explains what is stored on your device when you visit this website, and what is not. It is given to you under regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003, and sits alongside our privacy notice.

1. 1. What a cookie is

   1. A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on your device, so that it can recognise you or your device on a later visit. The same law also covers similar technologies, including local storage, session storage, pixels and device fingerprinting.
   2. Cookies are described as "first party" where they are set by the website you are visiting, and "third party" where they are set by another organisation whose content appears on the page, most commonly an advertiser or an analytics provider.

2. 2. Cookies this website sets

   1. None. This website sets no first party cookies and permits no third party cookies. There is nothing to accept, reject or manage.
   2. It also uses no local storage, no session storage, no tracking pixels and no fingerprinting.
   3. There is no advertising on this website, no advertising network is present, and nothing on it is used to build a profile of you or to target you with advertising anywhere else.
   4. We do not run Google Analytics or any equivalent analytics product. We do not measure your visit, and we cannot tell you apart from any other visitor.

3. 3. What does happen when a page loads

   Two things happen that involve someone other than you and us. Neither stores anything on your device, but you are entitled to know about them.

   TypefacesThe text on these pages is displayed in typefaces delivered by Google Fonts	When a page opens, your browser requests the font files from Google's servers, which are located outside the United Kingdom. To deliver them, Google necessarily receives the internet address of your device. No cookie is set by this request. This is covered in clause 7 of our privacy notice.
   Server logsOur web host records standard access logs	These record the internet address of your device, the page requested and the time. They exist to keep the site running and to protect it from attack, they are kept for a short period, and they are not used to identify you or to market to you.

   1. If you would prefer your device not to contact Google at all, most browsers and privacy extensions allow third party font requests to be blocked. The pages will still work and will display in a standard system typeface.

4. 4. Why there is no cookie banner

   1. Regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 requires consent before information is stored on, or read from, your device. It does not require a banner where nothing is being stored or read.
   2. Because this website stores nothing on your device, there is no consent for you to give, and asking you to click a button would be meaningless. The Information Commissioner's Office is clear that consent mechanisms should not be used where they serve no purpose.
   3. If that position ever changes, this notice will be updated first and a proper consent mechanism will be put in place before any non-essential cookie is set. We will not set one and ask afterwards.

5. 5. If you send us an enquiry

   1. The enquiry form on our home page sends us your name, telephone number, area and message. It does not set a cookie, and nothing you type is stored on your device by us.
   2. Where the form is delivered to us through a third party form service, that service processes the message on our behalf under a written contract and does not use it for its own purposes. What happens to the information afterwards is set out in our privacy notice.
   3. The telephone, WhatsApp and email links on the site simply open the relevant application on your device. Following a WhatsApp link takes you to a service operated by Meta, which has its own privacy and cookie practices that we do not control.

6. 6. Links to other websites

   1. This website links to GOV.UK, to the DVSA's Safe Driving for Life service, to Google and to social media. Those websites set their own cookies and publish their own notices.
   2. We are not responsible for the cookie practices of any website we link to, and this notice covers only behindthewheel.org.uk.

7. 7. Controlling cookies in your browser

   1. You do not need to change any setting for this website. If you wish to control cookies generally, every major browser lets you block or delete them, usually under Settings, then Privacy.
   2. Guidance for the browser you are using is published by its maker, and the Information Commissioner's Office also publishes plain English guidance for the public at ico.org.uk.
   3. Blocking cookies across the board can stop other websites working properly. It will not affect this one.

8. 8. Changes to this notice

   1. We review this notice at least once a year, and whenever we change anything about how the website works.
   2. The current version is always the one published here. The version number and review date are shown at the top of the page.
